A sunny afternoon as sailing boats fleck the sea like white moths. A spread of knapweed on the clifftop with flashing purple flowers and shining seedheads catch the light. The black textured areas represent the seaweed-darkened chalk pavements on the beach, seen from the clifftop at Rottingdean, Sussex.

The Common Knapweed, of the genus Centaurea, is named after the centaur Chiron, who used it as a healing herb. When the seeds have flown, the empty husk shines a silvery gold in the late summer light.

The Common Knapweed, of the genus Centaurea, is named after the centaur Chiron, who also gives his name to a dwarf planet. He can be seen as a metaphysical mediator between Saturn and Uranus, between which he orbits; a “rainbow bridge” by which we can navigate the tension between the restrictive energies of Saturn and the revolutionary imperatives of Uranus.
